The old cemetery in Greifswald is partly very enchanted. In addition to new graves, there are also many where the gravestones have long been very inscribed and overgrown. A list of the graves of famous people hangs at the entrance. The cemetery also houses a few small mausoleums.

The Old Cemetery is an important monument of garden and cemetery architecture. It was laid out according to a design by the academic university architect and drawing teacher Johann Gottfried Quistorp (1755 - 1835) and inaugurated in 1818. Burials in churches and within the city walls were prohibited from 1808. So the clay pit of the city brickworks in front of the city walls was filled with the earth that was left over when the shooting wall was leveled and the future cemetery was created there. As in the original design, a central main crossroads divides the area into four equal areas. The complex was supplemented by connecting paths over the course of the 19th century. The large burial chapels on the west and south walls were built by important Greifswald families in the 19th century.

The Old Cemetery is the final resting place for many important people from Greifswald, including mayors such as the railway pioneer Johann Carl Päpke (1797–1858) and scientists such as Friedrich Loeffler (1852–1915). Today the cemetery is still used as an urn burial site.
