Titus Brandsma was a Dutch Carmelite priest, professor and publicist from Friesland. Brandsma was a specialist in medieval mysticism and a mystic herself. As a strongly socially involved priest, he took initiatives in the field of Catholic emancipation, Catholic education and journalism.Brandsma opposed Nazism. In 1942, during World War II, he was arrested by the German occupiers. He had, among other things, spoken out against racial hatred in lectures and, at the behest of Johannes de Jong, Archbishop of Utrecht, drew up guidelines for Catholic magazines not to place advertisements from the National Socialist Movement. He was imprisoned in Scheveningen and Kamp Amersfoort and finally deported to Dachau concentration camp. After severe beatings he was murdered there. Pope John Paul II beatified him in 1985 as a martyr for the faith.[1] On May 15, 2022, Brandsma was canonized by Pope Francis.
