The Waag in Leeuwarden was known in past centuries as a "butter weigh house". Butter was the most traded dairy product on the weekly market days at the Waag. Until the end of the nineteenth century, Frisian butter was made (churned) by Frisian farmers' wives. "Karnster" is a reminder of this activity.
