In 1663, the Magistrate of the city of Leeuwarden decided that the entrance on the east side of the church (Bij de Put) should be given a more dignified appearance. To this end, an order was given to build a gate and renew the window above it. This window was fitted with stained glass depicting the Magistrate's weapons. The gate, which is still (partially) present, received a remarkable crown in the shape of a kind of obelisk topped by a small tree. The current Oranjepoortje still consists of an outer and inner gate, of which only the first has doors. The triangular pediment received a new Oranjeboompje in 1948.
This took place in the context of the restoration of the choir as a Frisian tribute on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Queen Wilhelmina's reign.
