On the southeastern edge of the village, the Feininger Tower was built in 1999 by Swiss artist and architect Marcel Kalberer as part of a project during Weimar's time as European Capital of Culture. This is also called the Double motif and is based on the 1920 painted picture The Church of Mellingen by Lyonel Feininger. The original of the picture hangs in the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal. The Feininger cycle path leads past the Feininger tower. (Wikipedia)

Mellingen - what has this Thuringian place in the Weimar region, which in the eyes of the travesty self-confidently and almost defiantly spreads in the enchanting Ilm landscape, as if it should take a piece of serenity of quietly breathing nature again in possession?
This question may have already moved to the German-American Lyonel Feininger, born in New York in 1871 and later to world renown as a painter and Bauhaus master. In response to this, in the years of his Weimar creative period, he searched again and again in countless foot and bicycle hikes through the quiet villages with which he had a "spiritual affinity." Mellingen was one of the picturesque villages, whose simple rural architecture was integrated into village structures that had evolved over the centuries , he was fascinated.
With block and pencil he sketched the Mellinger church, the old well house, the beaten streets with the farmhouses and picturesque
Angles. These "nature notes" were the basis for his painterly paintings, with which Feininger carried the name "Mellingen", like that of the other villages, all over the world.
Mellingen is today a modern, economically viable village, which, however, was able to preserve its tranquility and its rural flair: it has a lindenumsäumten Anger, narrow angled streets, Bauerngärtchen the house, the IIm with bridge and weir and resting on the mountain in the church St Georg with its thick tower and tailpipe, which today corresponds well with the modern tower design of Marcel Kalberer near the motorway.
What inspired Feininger once motivates hundreds of students once a year (panels a tower)
