"The church in Tönisberg is dedicated to St. Anthony the Great (251-356). It was built in neo-Gothic brick style and consecrated in 1898.
With Pastor Dr. theological Heinrich Laakmann, a clergyman came to Tönisberg in 1891, who had already worked as a chaplain in Waldniel during the construction of the new church. He immediately pulled out all the stops to raise funds for a new, larger church in Tönisberg. The foundation stone was laid on April 2, 1894 (seen under the choir cross). As early as Tuesday, December 18, 1894, church services were celebrated in the church. The church was consecrated and handed over to the congregation on July 17, 1898 by Bishop Hermann (Dingelstad).
Today's painting of the church interior was first carried out by the Tönisberg church painter Karl Heil in 1919. During a restoration in 1960, the polychrome was whitewashed and redesigned again under Pastor Wiegels (1967-76).
Because chunks of plaster fell from the church tower onto the street, a thorough renovation of the outside of the church began in 1982, which was completed in 1991 with a new polycromization of the church interior.
Three double-striped chancel windows with six pictures from the life of St. Anthony. The two side choir windows show the community of heaven and earth (God and man) in blue and red, intertwined circles.
The organ with its neo-Gothic prospect comes from the workshop of Fabritius and Brehm, Kaiserswerth. It was built in 1927 and is still purely pneumatic today, i. H. operated with air; until the end of the 1950s with bellows, then with a wind motor. The console has two manuals, pedals and swell mechanism. The organ has 17 registers.
Four steel bells from the Bochum association's steel works hang in the church tower. Antonius bell with 1580 kg, Marien bell with 1400 kg, Joseph bell with 630 kg, Sebastianus bell with 340 kg. Another small bell hangs in the roof turret above the nave and is used as a "tinkle bell".
The high altar in the choir of the church is no longer preserved in its original form. The remaining parts consist of the actual altarpiece with trusses and two side wings. In the course of the restoration in 2005, the high altar was completed again. On October 2, 2005, the pastor at the time, Alois Bimczok, was able to bless the high altar."
