The construction of the Schaephuysener windmill goes back to the second half of the 19th century. In addition to the location of an older wooden post mill, a stone windmill is said to have been built around 1874. Both grain mills were lease mills of the municipality of Rheurdt. The parish chaplain was paid from the lease proceeds.
In 1876, two years after the new mill was built, the post mill was badly damaged by a storm and finally demolished. A few years later it was donated to the parish.
After the First World War, the mill finally ceased grinding operations in 1918. After renovations, the mill was used as a youth hostel from 1924. But in 1937/38 the German air force moved in here and carried out experiments on the directional beam steering of aircraft. In 1941 the community got the mill back.
The mill has belonged to the church again since 1953 and is now part of a youth education center.(Source: Elisabeth Zenses, Rheinisches Mühlen-Dokumentationszentrum e.V. 2019, recorded as part of the joint project "Recording the mills in the Rhineland")
