The bell in front of the Bochum town hall symbolizes a milestone in the steel industry: the invention of steel casting around 1850. With this technology, complex forms and structures made of steel could be created - e.g. Bells - which was impossible with previous methods such as forging, turning or milling. The Bochum club, merged with Krupp from 1965, manufactured around 38,000 bells out of cast steel until 1970. The bell at the town hall was shown in 1867 at the Paris World Fair. It is one of the oldest and largest preserved steel bells ever. The bell is part of the Route Industriekultur: route-industriekultur.ruhr/themenrouten/22-mythos-ruhrgebiet/glocke-des-bochumer-vereins-vor-dem-rathaus.htmlMore about the history of the Bochum club: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bochumer_Verein
