the LauterachThe Lauterach has its source in the area of the market town of Lauterhofen in the Upper Palatinate Jura from two springs, the Lauterbrunnen and the Ziegelbrunnen. The Lauterach flows through the districts of Neumarkt and Amberg-Sulzbach in a south-easterly direction. Surrounded by areas used for forestry and agriculture, it crosses the towns of Lauterhofen, Pfaffenhofen, Kastl, Ransbach, Allersburg, Hohenburg, Adertshausen and Schmidmühlen.
The Lauterach's tributaries are the Mühlhauser Bach, the Weihermühlbach, the Hausener Bach and the Taubenbach as well as a number of dry valleys that do not carry water all the time.
From the source to the mouth, the Lauterach overcomes a height difference of approx. 128 m with an above-ground catchment area of approx. 327.2 km² and a total length of approx. 34.8 km.
To protect the village of Schmidmühlen from flooding in the Lauterach, a flood protection system was built by the Oberpfalz district and put into operation in 2008.
It was only marginally straightened and is therefore still structurally rich. Together with the Hausener Bach, the Lauterach is classified as a priority water body for fish fauna.Source: Weiden Water Management Office
