Best Hikes to St. James Parish Church (Pfarrkirche St. Jakobus), Hohenburg

Tips

  • Parish church of St. JamesThe parish church in Hohenburg is dedicated to James the Elder. It probably dates from around 1200 and was a Romanesque building with a square choir and east tower. It was rebuilt in its current form in 1663/64. The new building was necessary because the old church was not only far too small, but also dilapidated. The lower part of the 35 m high tower, which was included in the new building, is still Romanesque.
The high altar with its ornate tabernacle shows the Apostle Paul on the right and the Apostle Peter on the left, with the key in his hand. Above the tabernacle is St. James is depicted holding his hand protectively over the town of Hohenburg.
The left side altar “In Honor of the Mother of God” is decorated with a statue of the Mother of God. This originally stood in the castle chapel of St. Pankratius and dates from around 1450. It is the most valuable piece in the St. James Church. In 1641 the Lightning struck the powder tower of the castle; the explosion destroyed the entire east wing including the castle chapel. This statue remained completely intact. With the installation of the figure in the parish church, the people began to venerate Our Lady in a special way. In the excerpt from the altar is St. See Catherine.
The right side altar “In honor of St. Family". The excerpt shows “Jesus, as good shepherd.” On the ledge of the altar there is a figure of St. Martin.
Two large ceiling paintings in the nave show scenes from the life of St. James. On the one hand: The mother of the brothers James and John asks Jesus for her sons and on the other hand: James suffers a martyr's death by the sword.
In the chancel a ceiling painting shows St. James with his symbols: shell and walking staff. This picture, which was created around 1665, was uncovered again during the extensive renovation in 1989/90.
