The Kollegienhaus, a representative neo-baroque building, was built in 1886-1889 as the central building for academic lectures; Friedrich Wilhelm Scharff drew up the plans. In addition to numerous lecture halls and seminar rooms, the senate hall and an assembly hall were located here, as well as an academic reading room.
On the central avant-corps, the side facing the castle garden, framed by two obelisks, are personifications of the four founding faculties of medicine, philosophy, theology and law, as well as the motto »Veritati - Humanitati - Virtuti« in a cartouche.

The Kollegienhaus was inaugurated in 1889 when the number of students had risen to almost 1000. Built in the style of a baroque castle on the eastern edge of the castle gardens, the new main building of the university was intended to express the great importance of research and teaching. It housed 14 lecture halls, several seminar rooms and reading rooms as well as the senate hall and the auditorium, which were used for representation.
