The Wat Bo Phuttharam temple on Koh Samui is hardly known. We wonder why.

Because the atmosphere here is totally calming, the large monk statue is completely different to that in other temples and a visit is definitely worth it.

Wat Bo Phuttharam is located in the north of Koh Samui in the town of Bophut. Located directly on the Ring Road, the temple is a sight that you can visit on the way. The entrance is inconspicuous at a crossroads, we also drove past it. At the crossroads, the path leads to Fisherman's Village.

You can simply drive onto the temple grounds with a car or scooter. There is plenty of space to park, even in the shade of a tree.

In Wat Bo Phuttharam, an oversized monk sits on a boat that floats on a small pond. We have never seen a temple like this on Koh Samui before. You can walk onto the boat over a small bridge. At the entrance there are cloths that you can throw over your shoulders or with which you can cover your knees. Inside you will find some flowers, necklaces and other gifts that believers place on the monk statue. A staircase then takes you up to the platform on which the monk is sitting.

What is special here: You will most likely be almost alone in this temple. Only a few Thais are here and spend their lunch break or pray in the shade of the trees. Every now and then a monk walks past. We didn't meet any other tourists.

There are a few little things to marvel at on the ship. You can see many golden Buddha statues here. Believers have hung gold and silver leaves on a line. And there are many coins on the black monk's big foot. We think that this is a similar custom to throwing a few coins into a well. Perhaps you can make a wish here too. Or pray for something.

Extensive and almost deserted temple complex practically directly on the Ringstrasse.

The special feature of the complex is a ship built in a pond with a huge black monk statue. The ship can be accessed via a small bridge and you can see the monk up close. In addition to the statue, there are numerous other Buddha statues and beautiful temple buildings to explore. Absolutely worth seeing.

Good alternative to Big Buddha .... at least as great and impressive but almost no people and no sales hype
