West of the Biela Valley, a series of striking cliffs and walls form the western border of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. Particularly striking is the almost continuous cliff edge that runs south from Markersbach via Raitza (Rájec) to Tyssa (Tisá). The most famous rock formations are the Fichtenwände (Fir Walls) on the Saxon side and the Raitzaer Felsen (Rájecké skály), Bürschlicker Wände (Bürschlické stěny), and Tyssaer Wände (Tiské stěny) on the Bohemian side. Somewhat lesser known is the rock face north of Raitza, known as the Vogelwände (Ptačí stěny). Here, severe erosion has led to the actual cliff edge being broken up into isolated massifs and rock needles. These sometimes form bizarre shapes—some with "holes" in the rock that allow unusual views.
