From the so-called pottery tunnels, in which the starting material for the well-known high-quality Annaberg stoneware from the 16th to 19th centuries was won, the small spoil heaps of the irregularly designed tunnels can be found today at the broken mouth holes. These were originally up to 120 m long and had been driven from the slope of the Pöhlberg into the clay deposits, which were no more than two meters thick. In the vicinity of the tunnels there were sand and gravel pits as well as the quarry walls, which were protected as a geotope and visible from afar, with the massive basalt columns.

The clays are stored in the bedrock of the former valley sediments. These were essential for the provision of everyday objects. While in the "young" Sehma near Annaberg there were few sliding slopes with clayey layers that had to be transported uphill to the processing site after extraction, dry clay could be extracted on the Pöhlberg and transported with little effort to the town of Annaberg at the foot of the Pöhlberg .
