The origin of St. Peter's Church is situated in the 10th or 11th century. However, the current church building dates from 1848. The old Gothic church was almost completely demolished and a neo-Gothic building was built on the basis of the plans of the Brussels architect Joseph Dumont. Brick was mainly used for this, but wall plinths and window frames are made of iron sandstone. (RouteYou)

Shortly after 1044, when Rotselaar was mentioned in writing, a stone church may have been built. In 1178, the right of patronage was transferred from the Duke of Brabant to the lord of Rotselaar. In 1280 it came to the Abbey of Averbode. Only from 1834 onwards were the pastors appointed by the bishop again.

In the meantime, the Gothic church, built around 1500, had become dilapidated. In 1846-1848 a new church was built according to a design by Joseph Jonas Dumont. The demolition material from the old church was reused and a 16th-century window from the St. Anthony's Chapel was also placed in the west facade. The tower of the old church was preserved.

In the nineteenth century, the dilapidated Gothic church from around 1500 that stood here was replaced by the current neo-Gothic church. Only the west tower remained. However, the history of the parish church goes back much further and is interesting for those interested in religious heritage. The abbey of Averbode and the abbey of Vrouwenpark played a role in the history of the parish and church, as you can read at id.erfgoed.net/erfgoedobjecten/42695
