The St. Jakobi Church is located in the historic city of Goslar about 300 meters northwest of the market square. It was first mentioned in 1073, making it the oldest surviving and still used church in the city. Once the church was built on the initiative of the Hildesheim bishop Hezilo. He wanted to be present in Goslar and thus in close proximity to the temporal power of the emperor. But as a free citizen, the inhabitants of Goslar rejected the influence of the bishop and placed the church under the patronage of St. James. Presumably, this saint was selected because Goslar has always been one of the countless stations on the Way of St. James. Already in the Middle Ages, many inhabitants of the city pilgrimage to the tomb of the Apostle James the Elder to Santiago de Compostela, from where they returned with new impressions. From the epoch of the Romanesque period essentially only the little changed tower front of the Jakobikirche is preserved. Over time, the building experienced numerous extensions and conversions. At the beginning of the 16th century, the building was extensively transformed into a late-Gothic hall church. The St. Jakobi Church was the center of the Reformation in Goslar around 1529. After the Reformation, there was no longer a Catholic church in the city for a long time. Nearly three centuries later, in 1803, the Prussian government assigned the Church of St. James to the small Catholic community of Goslar. In 1805 the reading of a first Holy Mass took place in the church. The interior decoration of the again catholic church came mainly from the monasteries Riechenberg and Grauhof, which were dissolved in 1803. Here a high altar, the side altars, a confessional, the stalls, the sacrificial floor and innumerable other smaller objects found a new purpose. Due to the numerous alterations and changes in use, today the whole variety of styles can be found inside the St. Jakobi Church - from Romanesque to Gothic and Renaissance to Baroque. They merge into a new unit in this building.
