The Otto-Wagner-Spital was opened in 1907 as the Lower Austrian provincial sanatorium and nursing home for the nervous and mentally ill »Am Steinhof«. At the turn of the century, the institution with its numerous pavilions, built according to Otto Wagner's general concept, was considered the most modern and largest psychiatric clinic in Europe. At the Steinhof, Otto Wagner created a total work of art combining architecture and nature, in which every detail - from the floor tiles to the furniture and the door handles - was carefully planned.
