    Mahabuddha Temple is dedicated to Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha. Its construction was initiated by priest Abhaya Raj of Patan and a member of the Uku Baha monastery. The temple is often called "the temple of a thousand Buddhas" because a Buddha image is engraved on every brick. The temple is modelled on the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodhgaya, India which Abhaya Raj visited and wished to emulate. Abhaya Raj died before the temple was completed. His descendants laboured on the monument for generations, completing the project by 1601. Its consecration was witnessed by Siva Simha Malla, who conquered Patan in 1597 and ruled both Kathmandu and Patan until his death in 1619.
