Mani Mandapa Pavilions (1701 onwards) Set of two pati (rest houses) and an adjacent fountain north of the royal palace

The Mani Mandapa ("Pavilion of Jewels") is a set of two pavilions flanking the entrance to the adjoining Manga Hiti, a traditional stone drinking fountain. The pavilions are a form of dharmasala, or free public rest house, which wealthy patrons traditionally built as a form of public service to earn spiritual merit.

The south pavilion probably dates to the 16th century, while the north pavilion was present at least by 1701 when Yoga Narendra Malla renovated it. Both structures were altered over the course of the subsequent centuries. The pavilions were levelled by the April 2015 earthquake but were subsequently restored by the Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust using salvaged materials and new components carved in traditional fashion.
