Uku Bahal, also known as Rudravarna Mahavihara, is a former Buddhist monastery, about 200 m south of the Mahabuddha Sikhara and about 500 m south of Sundhara square and its famous sattal (rest house). It ranks among the oldest Buddhist sites in the Kathmandu Valley (9th century or earlier) and best-preserved monasteries in Nepal. However, the present structures are the result of various renovations - the last dating to after the 1934 earthquake. The monument seems to have survived the devastating April 2015 earthquake almost unscathed.
