The church was built between 1079 and 1098, funded by Palatine Sieciech. It was the main church of the Okół settlement. Initially, it was under the patronage of the Benedictines from the Sieciechów Abbey, and later from Tyniec. It may have originally been dedicated to St. Giles. According to Długosz, the people of Okół defended themselves here against the Mongols in 1241. In 1243, Konrad of Masovia surrounded the church with a moat and ramparts during the fight for the Kraków throne. Another Tatar invasion in 1260 likely resulted in the partial destruction of the church.
