About Rieke & Gerald

Just a few quick shopping trips for the weekend – and then off we go: a spontaneous two-day bike ride, because the weather forecast is perfect!

So, no car for dinner with friends, but an overnight stay.

A long ride through our Gütersloh district, from Bockhorst in the north to Stukenbrock in the south

Our last evening! One last stroll through the bustling Plaka, past the street musicians, up to the Acropolis, and experience the fantastic sunset on the Areopagus rock! Hundreds of others are planning the same – today, at 6:53 p.m., it's happening!

Pure sunshine all day, 26 degrees. But from 6:30 p.m

Four metro lines in Athens are easy to navigate. If you have trouble with the Greek script on the ticket machines, you can buy your tickets at the station kiosk in Monastiraki – like we did! Line 1 takes us quickly to Greece's largest port – Piraeus.

We start this tour at the ferry port. Approximately

We start this sunny new day with a stroll through the market halls, past meat and fish, and sometimes with very special smells!

We're meeting up with our guide Thomas (again - but a different one! 😉) and want to explore the historic center of Athens in three hours on e-bikes instead of the usual hop

Wow - what a city! Approximately 5 million people, half of Greece's population, live here in Athens! And we - for a few days - are staying in a chic city hotel in the Plaka district, right in the center of it all!

A single ticket for a precisely assigned 2-hour time slot on the Acropolis costs 44 euros

Rain, rain, rain – the last and perhaps most spectacular cycling stage in the Peloponnese has been canceled, of all days, on our wedding anniversary! From 1200 meters of elevation in the mountains around Sparta, it was supposed to descend to 0 meters on the Aegean Sea, what a shame!

      Instead, we'll visit

Today, things get adventurous on the Mani Peninsula, the "middle finger" of the Peloponnese. Wild, mountainous, rugged, and inaccessible, feared by sailors because of the dangerous winds in the bays – and therefore never conquered by other peoples! The Maniates have always remained free, lived by piracy

10:0 – with this result, the group agrees to a longer bike tour than planned today. So, we set off from the hotel in Neapoli on our bikes to the ferry port, watching the farmers harvesting olives along the way. It's arduous and involves a lot of manual labor!

We climb 760 meters in altitude by van, sometimes slaloming, as not all of the rockfalls, some of them the size of a football, have yet been cleared from the coastal road after yesterday's storm.

The Peloponnese is very sparsely populated, and this morning we feel it especially. For miles, we drive through

      Dear travel diary,

This morning, while having breakfast, we received an extreme weather warning via the Greek mobile network. It wasn't really necessary—we were already in the thick of it!

Our bikes aren't being used today, but there's a plan B. We visit an old Greek mansion and share our guide's surprise
