The water tower is a real highlight in Mönchengladbach

The water tower on Viersener Straße, also called Neuer Wasserturm, is one of the landmarks of Mönchengladbach. It was completed in 1909 after two years of construction and inaugurated on 14 November 1909, the construction cost amounted to 216,000 gold marks.

The tower has a height of 51 meters and is located north of the city center on one of the main arterial roads to Viersen. He suffered little damage during the Second World War.

It was built in the Art Nouveau style according to the plans of the city of Mönchengladbach master builder Otto Greiß, who had the goal to make the tower the symbol of the city. The Mönchengladbach sculptor Emil Hollweg was responsible for the stone sculptures. The lower sculpture wreath shows aquatic animals.

The water tower has two tanks for drinking water supply to the city center and the northern districts of Mönchengladbach. The lower tank with a volume of about 2300 cubic meters supplies the lower lying areas Mönchengladbach. The upper tank with a capacity of 800 cubic meters ensures the water supply of the Upper Town. In the construction of this water tower, for the first time, the load of the upper water tank was not borne by supporting structures inside the building but solely by the outer walls.

The landmark, which stands on the road island of Viersener Straße, Lindenstraße and Am Neuen Wasserturm, is located on a natural high plateau northeast of the old city center of Mönchengladbach in a largely historicist development.

The round, tapered tower consists of base base, shaft and head piece and has a total height of 51.35 m. It dates from the year 1908/09 and is a work of the former city councilor Otto Greiss. Inside, the tower retains two staircases and two water tanks of 2300 m3 (below) and 800 m3 (top) of contents.

On the north side of the tower are attached extensions, which originate from the construction period. These are the staircase tower, pump house and guard apartment, which also fall under the monument.

The eye-catching beautiful water tower is one of the outstanding technical structures of its time of origin. He "shows in a very unique way on the side facing the old Romanesque cathedral a relief with the patron saint of the city and the cathedral (St. Vitus) and sets the old and the new architectural landmark of the city in a special (visual) relationship to each other.
