At the end of the 16th century, Abbot Jakob Hecken had St. Vith built as an inn for Gladbach Abbey. It served as accommodation and food for the guests of the monastery. Today, the core of the St. Vith is one of the oldest non-church buildings in the city.
According to legend, it was created in 1586. The Abteiliche Pillory (= "Kax") originally stood on the market. When the abbot was absent, the ducal bailiff had the wooden pillory torn down and replaced with a stone one with the coat of arms of the dukes of Jülich. Since the abbot was unable to assert himself against this procedure despite protests, he ordered the construction of St. Vith so as not to be constantly reminded of his defeat when looking out the windows of the abbey.
However, the St. Vith did not previously have its prominent location. A neighboring three-storey row of houses between the market and the main parish church was destroyed in the Second World War and not rebuilt (see picture on the left).

Freshly tapped beer and brewery cuisine in the cozy tavern, Rhenish dishes in the modern restaurant.
