In Protestant Prussia in the 19th century, the Protestant church, which had previously led a shadowy existence in the Catholic areas, was able to show self-confidence with its church buildings in an outstanding position. This was demonstrated, among others, in Alt-Gladbach. The original Protestant church was on the Fliescherberg outside the city wall. In 1817, the Protestant community acquired a piece of land on the site of the Capuchin monastery, which had been abolished by secularization. The new Protestant Christuskirche was built between 1845 and 1852. At its establishment, the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV was involved, who was personally present at the laying of the foundation stone.
On the picture next door you can see the Christuskirche from the east, with a view of the choir and the tower. Instead of the garden in front of the church today runs the Viersener road (after a lithograph by Robert Geissler, Berlin 1870).
