The French twin town of Caen showed the close town twinning with Würzburg that had existed since 1962 with an original Norman country house and a matching garden. The house was built as a wooden structure with clay infill in the traditional architecture and construction method of the Pays d'Auge region of Normandy. All the materials for it, the beams, the limestone, the roof tiles, the windows and doors and even the clay were brought from Caen in September 1988. There was a total of 35 tons of material, including 6.5 meter long oak beams. Craftsmen and master builders - selected by the Chamber of Crafts of the Calvados department - had built the shell and roof of the country house in just four weeks, in accordance with the old traditional construction method. A garden was created around the house according to the plans and instructions of the Gardens Office of Caen, whose employees also carried out the work. During the 1990 state horticultural show, the country house was mainly used as a meeting place and exhibition space in the spirit of Franco-German friendship. Today anyone can rent the house for their private party.
