The monument was erected in 1922 to honor the 131 Turnhout victims of the First World War. Madelon has been showing off on the Zegeplein for years. She had a hard time at times. Her spot in the entertainment district made her desirable to some overconfident revelers. Every now and then someone decided to give her a tight hug. That climb did not always end well, both for the image and for her worshipers. The statue was restored. Thanks to her well-deserved makeover, Madelon is all set for her 100th birthday in 2022.
