The Gahrenberg Coal Mine was active from 1842 to 1970. It was primarily used for mining lignite, initially manually and later technologically assisted (via electric chain conveyors). Production peaked in the 1960s at over 24,000 tons per year.

Near this shelter, you'll find informative panels about lignite mining, including the role of the Habich's Söhne company and the production of the color pigment "Kasseler Braun" from so-called Farbkohle.
