The Mainzer Tor, also known as the Mainzer Turm or Spitzer Turm, was first mentioned in 1379 as the city's extreme western boundary. At that time, Miltenberg was about 2 km between the two towers (Mainz Tower in the west and Würzburg Tower in the east).
The coat of arms of Archbishop Johann von Nassau above the gateway (original in the Miltenberg City Museum) is still a reminder of the modifications made around 1400.
