The area was purchased in 1913 and work began on expanding the city park in the 1920s.

The city park (also known as Luna Park or Volkspark in earlier years) with its partly very old trees and extensive lawns and green areas borders directly on Borken's city center and invites you to linger and relax with its numerous benches. There is a play area for children. The small bird enclosure of the Borken Nature and Bird Protection Association is a popular meeting point.

Every year on the last weekend in August, the St. Johanni Citizens' Shooting Festival takes place in a marquee in the city park.
