On the Grendplatz in the center of Essen-Steele, the Marian column consecrated by the auxiliary bishop of Cologne on December 8, 1889 is reminiscent of the old Marienkapelle, which was demolished in 1885 due to dilapidation. The figural decoration of the memorial column represents, among other things, St. Lawrence, St. Boniface, and St. Elisabeth. The top of the column is crowned by a Madonna. The Marian column is still used today as a blessing station for the annual Corpus Christi procession in Steel.

Hiking

Due to the renovation of the Steeler area, the Marian column had to leave its place on the small Grendplatz.

In 1979 it was erected at its current location on the Grendplatz, in the axis between Hansastrasse and Bochumerstrasse.

In 2014 the Marian column turned 125 years old.
