The 'Grand Husseini Mosque' is one of the oldest mosques in Amman, completed in 1924 on behalf of King Abdullah I. The area around the mosque has developed into an important meeting point in the city center in recent decades.

The mosque stands on the site of an earlier mosque that was built during the reign of Caliph Omar Ben Al Khattab in the 7th century. AD and renovated during the Umayyad era, a century later. When Amman became the capital in 1921, reconstruction began on the old mosque, which was named after Sharif Hussein, the leader of the Great Arab Revolt and the king's late father.
