‘Citadel Citadel’ (Jabal al-Qal'a) is a hilltop archaeological site in Amman. The fortification dates back to the Bronze Age around 1800 BC. BC. In the first millennium B.C. In the 4th century BC the hill became the capital of the Kingdom of Ammon. Afterwards, many civilizations occupied the city: the Assyrians, Babylonians, Ptolemies, Seleucids, Romans and Byzantines, until the 7th century. AD the Umayyads came. There are many monuments on the hill that bear witness to historical eras, including the Temple of Hercules, the Byzantine Church, the Umayyad Palace and the Ayyubid Tower.
Many buildings were destroyed by an earthquake in 749 AD.

Above the city of Amman: Ancient pieces about the history of the city. Including the Hercules Temple, a museum and a incredible view over the city in all directions.

The Amman Citadel sits enthroned on Jabal Al Qal’a, one of the highest hills in the city. A tour of this impressive open-air museum shows older periods of the history of Jordan and at the same time great panoramic views of today's Amman.
