The 'Umayyad Mosque' was built on the citadel of Amman around 710 to 740 AD, probably at the beginning of Umayyad rule. The mosque is located south outside the palace area.
The 'Umayyad Mosque' is an example of early mosques built in the Persian style and characterized by a "forest of columns". This type of mosque is otherwise only found in Persia and Mesopotamia.
