"Around 1225, the castle was built by Count Volkwin III von Schwalenberg as the "Oppidium Sualanberg". The Counts of Schwalenberg were known as notorious robber barons.

After the death of the last Count von Schwalenberg, the castle fell into disrepair; especially from the beginning of the 18th century more and more. From the second half of the 18th century until about 1900 the building was used as a granary and the basement as a prison. In the years 1911-1913 the castle was used as a paragial residence for Princess Friederike zur Lippe. In the years after the Weimar Republic, a mothers' convalescence facility was located here. Around 1945, under Heinrich Drake, the premises were converted into a Protestant children's convalescent home. This remained so until 1963. In 1964, the city of Schwalenberg became the owner of the historic complex.

From 1960, the rooms of the castle with the exposed location and the fantastic view of the surroundings were prepared for a restaurant and hotel business. In the years that followed, these were used again and again, but at times they stood empty. In 2017 there was a change of ownership. From 2018, rooms within the castle were converted into holiday apartments."
