St. James is one of the four main land bastions that make up the Valletta Land Front, a defensive wall protecting the land approach to the city. The bastion is located on the southeast side of the main city gate in Valletta, the City Gate. It is an obtuse bastion resembling an arrowhead with protruding and rounded orilons. The bastion had two batteries, one on each wing. The original thick parapet reinforcement with loopholes at the top of the bastion was dismantled and the batteries were dismantled. In the left wing of the bastion there is an exit port connected to the counter-guard by an arched bridge, and at the top of its most protruding corner a cylindrical watchtower covered with a domed roof is located.
