The militias, such as the Sint-Jorisgilde and the Sint-Sebastiaangilde, consisted of armed citizens who defended the city in emergencies and also maintained order in the city.
In 1798, the militias were disbanded. The buildings (shooting ranges and a club building) were demolished in 1821, but the original Doelenpoort from 1645 was preserved.
