The park is along the Rapenburg and opposite to the Kamerlingh Onnes building of the University. Once it hosted the Faculty of Physics where many top scientists taught. Like Karmerlingh Onnes, Albert Einstein jus to mention a couple of names.

The Rapenburg in the 18th century was partially destroyed due to the explosion of a big load of gunpowder that was being transported by boat.

Hiking

Beautiful city park on the site of the gunpowder disaster from 1807. The park built in 1886 along the water of the Steenschuur is named after Pieter Adriaansz. van der Werff, mayor of Leiden at the time of the Siege of Leiden in the Eighty Years' War. His statue is in the middle of the park.
