The Zouderwoudse Singel is a very picturesque area. The moat once ran directly outside the city walls and provided additional protection against attackers. After Leiden's liberation in 1574, many Protestants fled to Leiden from Antwerp, Brussels, and other territories conquered by the Spanish, so the city had to expand its city walls several times between 1575 and 1650. This happened in the 17th century, extending southward, and thus the Zouderwoudse Singel was located within the city. A further expansion of the city to the south took place in the 19th century. Many houses along the canal date from this period.
