The almost 300 hectare nature reserve, which was first established in 1985 (on a slightly smaller area) and redesignated in 2010, is part of one of the most extensive moor complexes in southwestern Lower Saxony. Large areas of the reserve have been significantly altered over the past centuries by drainage and hand-cutting of peat.
