In the summer of 2006, the tower of the church of Meldert (Sint-Willibrorduskerk) collapsed, with a lot of damage in the nave and inside. If you stand on the street side of the church (where the parking is also located) you don't immediately see it, but you can't miss it at the back: a special modern tower and, what I find interesting, a lot of glass that lets in light and through which you can see from the outside in. Something different from most closed buildings that are churches. Well worth a visit before or after your walk. Also take a look at the site of the architectural firm with beautiful photos and information for those who are interested in the renovation process. barchi.be/projecten/restauratie-st-willibrorduskerk-meldert

The parish church of Meldert (Lummen) is dedicated to Saint Willibrord.

This brick church with late-Gothic nave and side aisles (1625-1683) acquired a classicist appearance through extensive renovations and repairs over the centuries.

The ironstone tower, originally separate from the church and built in 1859, may be of early medieval origin.

The oldest parts of St. Willibrord's Church have been protected since 1951.

In 1973 the protection was extended to the entire church building.

As a result of the repeated renovations, the supporting structure and the balance of the tower were severely affected.

Just before the start of the stabilization works (2006), the church tower collapsed.

The church is a cruciform basilica with a built-in west tower. Its origins are probably Romanesque (12th and 13th century). The nave, the southern transept arm and the choir are late Gothic (1625). The side aisles are from 1677-1683. Brick was used as material, with marlstone and iron sandstone also being used. Major restoration work took place in 1660, 1715, 1851, 1856 and 1880, giving the building a classicist appearance. In 1880, the northern transept arm was extensively renovated. The tower was built in 1668. It was a square tower in iron sandstone, covered with a constricted spire. The tower was built in 1859. From 1995 onwards, the tower began to shift. After restoration work, the tower collapsed on 7 July 2006. Part of the nave was also damaged. The church was restored in 2011, but instead of the old tower a modern tower was built, also square, but built in modern materials and covered by a tent roof.
