"Höll" or "Hell", the "wild, abysmal area", is in Traunstein as

Field and house name already guaranteed in the 15th century. The term "Hell" probably points to the location of the houses near the city hill. In addition to the "Höllgasse", it also gave its uncanny-sounding name to the brewery, the development of which can be traced very closely using the sources in the Traunstein town archive.

      History of the Höllbräu

"Höll" or "Hell", the "wild, abysmal area", is in Traunstein as

Field and house name already guaranteed in the 15th century. The designation

"Hell" probably points to the location of the houses near the city hill. Next to

the “Höllgasse” was also given its eerie-sounding name by the

Brewery, its development based on the sources of the Traunstein town archive

can be understood in a very closed way.

The history of the building at Höllgasse 4 can be traced back to the year 1572: The brewer Michael Oser acquires two houses on the Salzmaierstiege in the alley "so called Hell" and thus establishes the "Bräu in der

hell". From 1600, Hans Wesstner finally united both houses in one hand.

The structural unification takes place either in the 1660s or else

after the town fire of 1704, which did not spare the Höllbräu. 1777

Höllbräu Martin Winklpeiner acquires the former Grosschedl-Haus am

Town square, today house number 37. The town fire in 1851 destroyed the brewery.

After reconstruction in 1878, the group of buildings consisted of:

Residential and brewery with stables, malt house and water reserve,

Slaughterhouse, cellar and elevator runway, fermenting cellar and wash house,

yard space. After the two city fires, the Höllbräu became just that in 1908

victim of a major fire. The reconstruction provides the architectural picture with

flat bay window and advance wall, which it still offers to a large extent today.
