Another set of well-preserved kilns on this track, which used to be the Rosedale Railway. These were four terraced calcining (i.e. roasting) kilns, each with four bays. These were built in the 1860s. From here, ironstone was transported by rail to Teesside.

Fantastic piece of history. I found two great websites after my hike that are really quite informative, firstly the ubiquitous Wikipedia provides great detail (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ironstone_mining_in_Rosedale), and secondly Land of Iron brings it all to life (landofiron.org.uk/locations/rosedale-iron-kilns).
