        ROCKGROWTH 808 Atomium

RockGrowth illustrates the evolution of an ongoing project, Absent Nature, based on the impossible assumption – from a biological point of view – that one would plant a rock (mineral) as a seed and observe its germination and growth as a witness.

When the rock is planted or buried, the mineral, under the influence of biomimicry, acquires a plant DNA and germinates. It then grows, spreading and developing both below and above ground. Each of its facets grows at its own pace, direction and dimensions. In this way, a faceted tree trunk is created which later – after felling – becomes a faceted log. At the same time, both the bulbs and the roots develop branches from which new facets will spread.

Each of these offshoots becomes a RockGrowth. If you were to chop up the growing parts by removing the roots, bulbs and branches from the core, the isolated element would once again reveal its mineral origins and return to the state of a unique atom or a spatial form. Its reflection and geometry create a complex, dynamic image, like a still image from a film of a reality that is constantly evolving.

Paris designer Arik Levy has created a bright red steel object to sit beneath the Atomium sculpture in Brussels, which reflects the colourful piece in its shiny spheres.

Arik Levy's stainless steel RockGrowth sculpture is positioned at the foot of the giant metal structure, designed by engineer André Waterkeyn and architects André and Jean Polak for the Brussels World Fair in 1958.
