Lively bustle in old walls, a medieval townscape with idyllic half-timbered houses, narrow alleys and cobblestone pavement.

Monschau is the cultural center of an entire region and one of the most popular holiday and excursion destinations in the Eifel.

MONSCHAU: THE OLD CLOTH MAKING TOWN

The last of the cloth factories that produced the finest fabrics here on the Rur closed more than 100 years ago. However, the stately houses of the rich people of Monschau from the 17th and 18th centuries have remained - a nice contrast to the winding half-timbered town that developed around Monschau Castle (today partly a youth hostel) from the late 12th century.

The interior of the Red House, built in 1752 by the cloth maker Johann Heinrich Scheibler and today one of the city's landmarks, tells of the wealth of the past. The Troistorff house from 1783 is only a few meters away.

Monschau is at its most beautiful as a total work of art from the Rur, which meanders through the town, from rows of houses, alleys, bridges and squares that are crooked. So take a long walk through the old town, stopping at the market, where you can fortify yourself with a piece of opulent cake in the "Café Kaulard", which opened in 1958. For more than just a coffee, head through the lively Rurstrasse and Stadtstrasse to the Wilhelm Maassen coffee roastery. Since 1862 it has been based in a building that is now 300 years old.

The historic town, characterized by its half-timbered and slate houses, is definitely worth seeing. However, you should choose times that are not too crowded with tourists for an enjoyable and impressive visit.
