This bridge symbolizes the crossing of the sacred realm from the pagan world. It tops the Haraikawa river (literally: "the river where one cleanse its sins"), a river where the Yamabushi priests (practitioners of the Shugendo religion) do many purifying rituals, such as the Omisogi ceremony in mid-March.

An absolutely magical place. It's the image one has of ancient Japan: the red wooden bridge, the stone-paved steps, the temples in the heart of nature (immense cedars, waterfall...). Certainly the most beautiful shrine visited during the trip, far ahead of the more popular and crowded temples.
