Mt. Haguro's pagoda is the living proof that the mountain was once a Buddhist sacred place, despite it being ruled by a Shinto shrine since 1869.
This beautiful wooden structure was first built over one thousand years ago, but the current pagoda is a reconstruction from the 15th century. It is registered as a National Treasure of Japan and is the only one of its kind to not be painted, in an effort to make the pagoda blend within the surrounding nature.
