      The Schwerin slag heap
Graf Schwerin mine slag heap with the large sundial
The large slag heap has an area of around 14.5 hectares. Its highest point is 151 metres above sea level and around 33 metres above the surrounding area. The recultivation of the slag heap was completed in 1988 and was acquired two years later by the then Ruhr Municipal Association. Further design was carried out in the mid-1990s as part of the IBA Emscher Park by individual artists, but also through implemented citizen suggestions. Dry stone walls, tree and hedge plantings and the landscape balcony made of sandstone and railway tracks with a view of the neighbouring fields and wind turbines were added, as was the wooden artwork "Sinuspergola" or the water temple on the edge of the slag heap made entirely of mining materials in a spring area.
The slag heap is particularly distinctive, however, is the geo-cross, which represents steps leading to the summit, aligned exactly in the cardinal directions. The materials of the stairs form the industrial axis (steel slabs in the west, the railway tracks made from them in the east) and the natural axis (wood in the south and further processed wooden railway sleepers in the north). The axes intersect at the center of Jan Bormann's large sundial at the highest point of the Schwerin slag heap. See: ruhrgebiet-industriekultur.de/halde-schwerin
