From below on the Weser, the view of the monument is only half as beautiful as looking down at the Weser from the Kaiser 👌👍

        History

After the death of Kaiser Wilhelm I in 1888, Kaiser Wilhelm monuments were commissioned in many places in Prussia. The personal and national monument is one of the last large monuments to place the emperor at the centre of the culture of remembrance at the end of the 19th century, which placed national unification at the forefront. At Porta Westfalica, a place that shapes the landscape, the Kaiser Wilhelm monument implemented an educational programme of national unification. Here, the unification of the German Empire as a result of the Franco-Prussian War was celebrated in the person of the emperor.

The monument was built between 1892 and 1896 by resolution of the provincial parliament of the Prussian province of Westphalia, based on plans by the Berlin architect Bruno Schmitz. On 15 March 1889, the Westphalian Provincial Parliament chose Porta Westfalica as the location by a narrow majority.
