In 1941, the Germans began building a railway gun battery in Bredene north of the port city of Ostend. The four 280 mm. Weapons were placed on a turntable so that they could fire 360 °. A fire control bunker was centered in front of and on the four cannons. Behind the guns were an ammunition bunker and several bunkers for the crews. The battery was directly connected to the station in Ostend by train.
